SUMMARY:16+hr OFA 15-16 Feb 2023
DESCRIPTION:Cost: £160 \nLooking to learn some life saving skills? Need to revalidate your Outdoor First Aid before the season really kicks off? Want a course that actually takes place on the hill with a really experienced trainer? then… \nIf you work or play in the outdoors then this is the course you want. Kelvyn James is the current President of the British Association of International Mountain Leaders\, an enhanced skills  community First Responder and a Field Trainer for North West Ambulance Service. He’s delivered First Aid courses for nearly a decade and knows that hands on is the best way to learn. \nThis course meets the requirements of most outdoor NGB’s (MTA\, AMI\, BAIML\, BCU) we offer a £20 discount for members who can quote a valid membership number when booking. \n\nThis course will be somewhere (exact venue tbc) that gives us quick fast access to some wonderful locations. Joining instructions are sent when bookings are confirmed.\nThe course runs from 09:00 to roughly 18:00.\nRefreshments (tea\, coffee\, biscuits – heck maybe even cake…) are provided\, participants need to bring their own food and snacks; the venue has basic kitchen.\nThe course is a mixture of classroom\, practical and outdoor sessions. You’ll need to bring clothes that will keep you warm and dry and that you don’t mind getting dirty. We’ll typically be outside for 4+ hours each day.\nAll learning materials are provided but participants should bring their own method of taking notes etc. Photography & recording is by group agreement only.\n\n\n16hr Outdoor First Aid Details                           Not sure? Send Enquiry \nplease note places are not allocated until payment is made

SUMMARY:Loving Lichens Fri 24-09-2021
DESCRIPTION:This 3 hour workshop is aimed at anyone who wanders in the Great Outdoors and would like to find out a little more about the oft overlooked wonders that are lichens. \nWith over 1700 varieties identified in the UK and 18\,000 worldwide these fabulous little organisms really are one of natures most neglected wonder. \nSymbiotic\, ancient\, vital – used as food\, to trace the movement of mountains\, to measure the quality of our air – and found everywhere. Lichens are the dominant species for 8% of the worlds land. \nThe workshop will take the form of a walk through the wonderful little visited valley of Borrowdale nr Shap (5 mins from J38\, M6). We’ll look at different types of lichens\, where they grow\, how to identify them & what they are used for\, now\, by ancient man and down the centuries between. \nI’ll be providing everything you need for the day – you’ll just need to be able to keep yourself warm\, dry and enthusiastic! \n

DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a little different this year – a fun competition\, with fun prizes. \nYou’ll need to be super accurate with your pacing…but\, and you’ll know this having attended the prior sessions\, you’ll also need to be able to utilise other strategies and different skills. \nThis will be a minimum of assessment level navigation – but each leg will have learning lessons involved. \nThe session will be in the East of Cumbria with relatively easy access from the M6 – the final location will be confirmed in the prior week. \nI’m restricting access to this session – so if you’re interested drop me a line first as priority will be given to anyone who has attended a previous Mountain Services Night Navigation Session. \nThis session is free for MTA Members.

SUMMARY:Loving Lichens 09-09-20
DESCRIPTION:This 3 hour workshop is aimed at anyone who wanders in the Great Outdoors and would like to find out a little more about the oft overlooked wonders that are lichens. \nWith over 1700 varieties identified in the UK and 18\,000 worldwide these fabulous little organisms really are one of natures most neglected wonder. \nSymbiotic\, ancient\, vital – used as food\, to trace the movement of mountains\, to measure the quality of our air – and found everywhere. Lichens are the dominant species for 8% of the worlds land. \nThe workshop will take the form of a walk through the wonderful little visited valley of Wet Sleddale nr Shap. We’ll look at different types of lichens\, where they grow\, how to identify them & what they are used for\, now\, by ancient man and down the centuries between. \nI’ll be providing everything you need for the day – you’ll just need to be able to keep yourself warm\, dry and enthusiastic! \n
