A totally new for 2023 workshop for Mountain Leaders & anyone interested in the natural world around them, we'll be combining the massive and the micro scales of nature;
Geology & Lichens
This part of the session will be led by Peter Lovatt - you'll have seen his articles in Professional Mountaineer amongst other places. He'll aim to:
- try and unravel the 400 million year history of this landscape.
- have a go at identifying some rock outcrops and understand how they're formed.
- think about the forces that shaped the landscape - geology, glaciation, rivers & human influence.
This part of the session will be led by Kelvyn James - a self taught lichens geek & IML who also lives very locally. He'll aim to:
- explain the vital role that lichens have in our ecosystem.
- have a go at identifying some lichens that we can find fairly reliably.
- learn some fun facts about these wonders of the natural world that most people never notice.
This workshop will be taking place in the Borrowdale Valley near Tebay - 5 minutes South of J38 of the M6.
The workshop will run from 10am - 16:00(ish) so you'll need to bring:
- Waterproofs
- Warm Clothes
- Lunch, drinks, snacks
- Camera/phone/something to take notes (if you want to)
